SFA Boss Burley Rebuffs Great Britain Olympic Deal
Scotland Football Association manager George Burley is openly resisting the idea of creating a team that will represent Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics to be held in London. Under a deal with England, Wales, and Ireland, Scotland will allow a GB team to participate in the Olympics, but they will definitely not send Scottish players. Burley insisted the plan will not sit well with the Scottish because of national identity issues. He further stressed that the SFA is standing their ground on the matter and will not change its stance anytime soon. Burley pointed out that, to the Scottish, the national team is a top priority. They are keen on keeping their international team, rather than have a British team to play for them in the World Cups.
The SFA is apparently worried that a British team could jeopardize things, which is why the GB team prospect remains hypothetical for the Scottish. Earlier plans reveal that any team bringing home an international title will represent Great Britain in the Olympics. However, Burley has a negative take on it saying such competition is not feasible given the hectic schedules of the football teams.
Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond is not impressed with England’s bid either. He asserted that Scotland won’t play a part in the Olympic team, if there will be one. In an emphatic statement to the media, Salmond said the whole concept is “ridiculous” and could potentially start a political rift. Well, maybe it’s time for the English to rethink their strategy.
