Football commentary – about the tempo of a football game

There are many interesting aspects of commentating on a football match, not least of which is analysing a game’s tempo. Take, for example, the case of two teams that are evenly matched playing each other and one of the two teams takes the lead. It would pay for a commentator to provide useful insights about the tactics that each team should employ. Such analysis will add spice to the commentary and provide listeners with an interesting take on the game.

Some commentators are of the opinion that when one team takes the lead the proper football strategy from that point onward would be for the game to slow down when on the attack and force the team that is trailing to try and hurry their game and leave them open to counter-attacks.

There are other instances when one team that is the clear favourite has to employ a certain kind of strategy that a football commentator will need to dwell on to keep listeners glued to the match.

It seems that according to certain studies, when a team uses the hurried approach in their attack their chances of winning the match would be less than 0.5, while if they used the slowdown defensive approach the probability of their winning the match would be greater than 0.5.

To take this point forward is the task of a commentator who should also inform listeners of the fact that it is far better for an underdog team to employ the hurry-up strategy, whereas the other team should employ the slow-down tactics. Interesting, isn’t it?
