Football commentary – some very familiar voices

If you watch Premiership football on the television, some of the voices that have been informing you about the goings-on on the field will have become very familiar. When you turn on your television set to hear about the latest match being played you are sure to derive a certain amount of comfort from hearing a familiar voice describing the football match.

Some of the better known English football commentators are sure to be familiar. For example, Martin Tyler and Alan Parry are names which are sure to ring a bell. Parry’s distinctive voice has been describing football games ever since 1973 when he first debuted on BBC. He has worked for BBC, Sky and ITV.

Another familiar voice is that of Steve Banyard, who, along with footballer turned pundit Paul Walsh, has been describing the action of many football games for well over a decade. Another big name in football commentary is that of Ian Darke, whose voice is also very familiar to those who follow boxing because he has commentated on that sport as well.

Rob Hawthorne is a BBC Five Live football commentator whose voice is also heard on Sky Sports. It is fair to say that more than a decade of his commentating has given much pleasure to every lover of the beautiful game. With so many great football commentators around it is hard to decide who the best is. However, one name that stands out the most is surely that of Martin Tyler.
